Snow Mountain （雪山）
For any hiking enthusiast living or vacationing in Taiwan, I’d highly suggest planning for a Snow Mountain hike. It can easily be done as a weekend trip departing Friday night (from Taipei) and returning Sunday evening. It is an exhausting hike, but well worth the effort!
Ninja the way up on Snow Mountain? That’s real trick to hiking Taiwan’s second highest peak.
Sandiaoling Hike (三貂嶺) – Pinxi Area
A friend invited me to join a group Taiwanese through a 18km hike in an area between Pinxi and Jiufen. The weather held up quite well, and it turned out to be a hiking experience I had never experienced before. For one, the average age was somewhere between 40-50 years old. We were by the youngest of the group. Second, this hike takes you through open fields, brush fields, an old mining facility, and a beautiful waterfall to top it all off.
Unfortunately, my camera was acting up and the majority of the pictures were completely lost 😦 The pictures shown are all within the last 5 km the hike.
A friend of mine recently took a position with SpaceX and had moved to Texas. If you asked me two years ago, working for a company like SpaceX would have been my dream of mine.
He has asked me if I missed anything back home. It’s been about two months overseas and I hadn’t really taken the time to think about much until now. The comfort of being around close friends and family is the most obvious one. But luckily, the internet has made it much easier to maintain contact. Continue reading
Since high school, I had an idea I wanted to be an engineer but it probably wasn’t until college where the interest really started to pique. But even after graduating and having a somewhat difficult time determining a career path I still had some doubts about whether it was still the right decision.
I got lucky and landed in a career path that I didn’t even know I wanted at the time with a reputable and respectable aerospace company. I’ve had the opportunity to be an engineer doing the type of work that I really enjoyed. I thoroughly enjoyed the work, but I got caught up in the rush to quickly to find a job after college, only to find that I still have a good majority of my life left to work.
Why would anyone throw it away? Simply put, I don’t think I would have this good of an opportunity to travel and explore my personal interests.
Pinxi (平溪) is such a great area, littered with places to eat and beautiful scenic mountains views. The area is ladened with great hiking trails that make for a great day trip from Taipei City.
Many Pinxi hiking path fall along the crest of rock formations. The paths are guided by steel stakes bounded by twined rope.
Pinxi （平溪區） is an area most well known in Taiwan for lighting sky lanterns (Tiandeng, 天燈). These lanterns carry the wishes of the owner into the sky in hopes that they will come true. The old style streets in Pinxi also add a bit of flavor making the experience enjoyable whether or not you decide to light your own sky lantern. The affordable street food, lush green landscapes, and romantic feeling of the area makes for a great date location ;). Otherwise, still a good places to go with friends.

Second month here in Taiwan now passed, and it seems to be pass quicker everyday!
